A hobbyist project appeared on Hacker News this week that should stop any preparedness-minded reader for a moment. Built as a tribute to Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary, the tool pulls real stellar position data from the European Space Agency's Gaia catalog and renders an interactive navigation chart — the kind the novel's protagonist uses to find his way between stars. It's a clever piece of work. It's also a clean demonstration of a gap most families haven't thought about: we are building better and better AI-assisted navigation tools, and most of us are becoming less and less capable of using any navigation at all without a charged device and a cell signal.
What's actually changing
The Gaia dataset the project draws from contains positional data for over a billion stars. The project itself is a toy — nobody is navigating interstellar space. But the underlying pattern is real: AI and data-rich tools are making complex spatial reasoning accessible to anyone with a browser, while the baseline human skill of reading a sky, a topo map, or a compass is quietly atrophying.
This matters for families in a specific, non-dramatic way. Power outages in the U.S. have been growing longer on average, according to EIA tracking data going back several years. Wildfire evacuations, flood displacements, and winter storm isolations increasingly put households in situations where phones die, cell towers go dark, and the ability to orient yourself physically becomes relevant. Not survival-movie relevant. Just: which direction is the highway, where does this road go, how far to the next town.
GPS has been so reliable for so long that most adults under 40 have never seriously learned to read a road atlas, use a compass, or identify Polaris without a phone prompt. That's not a moral failing. It's rational adaptation to a tool that works 99.8% of the time. The problem is the 0.2% — and the fact that it clusters: outages happen during the exact conditions (storms, fires, infrastructure stress) when you most need to move.
The deeper pattern here is that AI is accelerating this dynamic. Tools are getting better and more accessible, which is genuinely useful. But each convenience layer that replaces a skill creates a new single point of failure.
What we'd actually do
Learn to find Polaris and use it to orient yourself. This takes one clear night and about fifteen minutes. Polaris sits within one degree of true north and doesn't move. Finding it — trace the outer edge of the Big Dipper's cup upward, five times the distance between those two stars — is a skill that works anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere with no equipment.
The investment is trivially small and the payoff is permanent. You do not need a star chart app. You do not need a compass. On any clear night, you can orient a map or confirm a direction of travel.
Keep a physical road atlas in your car, and one at home. AAA and Rand McNally still publish them. The current editions are under $15. A family that evacuates a wildfire or detours around flood-closed roads without cell service will use that atlas. One that doesn't have it will guess.
Practice reading a topo map once. The USGS publishes free downloadable topo maps for every part of the country at nationalmap.gov. Print the sheet covering your county. Learn the contour lines, the elevation intervals, and how to identify ridgelines versus valleys. You do not need to become a backcountry navigator. You need to be able to look at a map and understand whether the terrain ahead rises or drops.
Download offline maps before you need them. Both Google Maps and Maps.me allow full offline downloads of regional map tiles. Do this for your home region, your most likely evacuation routes, and any area you travel to regularly. An offline map on a phone with airplane mode on will work for days on battery. This bridges the gap between no-device navigation and real-world emergency use.
The bigger picture
The Hail Mary star chart is a beautiful piece of work, and it's genuinely fun to use. The point isn't that AI tools are bad or that you should refuse to rely on them. The point is that every tool that works through infrastructure creates a household dependency that deserves a backup.
Durable families don't reject technology. They maintain enough baseline skill that technology's failure is an inconvenience, not a crisis. A compass, an atlas, and fifteen minutes with Polaris cost almost nothing. They're worth having before the next outage, not after.
