In Yakima in August 2023, the Air Quality Index held above 200 — "very unhealthy" — for nine consecutive days. Families sealed doors with towels, schools moved recess indoors, and the Yakima Valley's agricultural workforce had no meaningful shelter to retreat to. That was not an anomaly. It was a preview.

A report this week from The Washington Post examines why the U.S. continues to face worsening wildfire smoke seasons despite years of awareness and some policy movement. The structural answer involves a combination of accumulated forest fuel loads, hotter dry seasons, and land management that has lagged behind the pace of the problem. None of that changes quickly. What can change, this week, is how prepared your household is to function inside a smoke event.

What's actually changing for Washington households

Washington sits at a particular geographic disadvantage. East of the Cascades, fires in the Okanogan Highlands, the Colville and Wenatchee National Forests, and across the border in British Columbia generate smoke that pools in the Columbia Basin and Yakima Valley. West of the Cascades, the mountains that normally act as a shield become a funnel when upper-level wind patterns reverse — which happens several times most summers now. Puget Sound communities that once saw smoke as a rare inconvenience increasingly face week-long events.

The Washington State Department of Ecology's AirWatch system tracks this in near-real time, and it's worth bookmarking before you need it. But monitoring the air is not the same as having a plan for when it turns bad.

The gap most households have is not awareness. It is infrastructure. People know smoke is bad. They don't have a sealed room, a working filter, or enough days of medication on hand to outlast a nine-day event.

What we'd actually do

Check your HVAC filter type and replace it before fire season peaks. Most residential furnace filters — the flat fiberglass ones — do almost nothing for fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which is the lung-damaging component of wildfire smoke. A filter rated MERV-13 or higher will capture a meaningful portion of PM2.5. Replacing a standard filter costs under $30 at any hardware store. If your system can handle the increased airflow restriction of a MERV-13 (most newer systems can; check your manual or call your HVAC service), this is the single highest-leverage change you can make to your home's smoke defense. Run the system on fan-only mode during peak smoke hours even if you don't need heating or cooling.

Build one "clean room" in your house, not a whole-house solution. Sealing every room in a 2,000-square-foot house from smoke infiltration is impractical. One room — a bedroom, typically — can be made meaningfully cleaner with a portable air purifier rated for the square footage, a door draft stopper, and tape over any obvious air gaps around windows. Spend your money and effort on one room done well rather than a half-measure spread across the whole house. A HEPA-rated purifier sized for 200-300 square feet costs $80-$150 and will pull PM2.5 down substantially within an hour of running.

Stock 10 days of any respiratory or allergy medications your household depends on. Smoke events in Washington have now reached nine or more consecutive days in affected regions. If someone in your house uses a rescue inhaler, antihistamines, or a nasal corticosteroid, confirm right now that you have more than a week's supply. Pharmacies in smoke-affected regions do run short during extended events. Washington's Medicaid and Apple Health plans cover most of these medications; the barrier is usually refill timing, not cost.

Download and bookmark the Ecology AirWatch map and set a threshold for action. Decide in advance at what AQI level you pull people inside, cancel outdoor plans, and close the house up. The EPA's breakpoints are a reasonable starting guide: 101 (unhealthy for sensitive groups) is a reasonable threshold for kids, elderly household members, or anyone with asthma. 151 (unhealthy for all) is the threshold to treat as a household emergency regardless of who lives with you. Having a number decided in advance removes the friction of deciding in the moment when you're busy.

If your household includes outdoor workers, farm workers, or anyone who can't shelter indoors, get N95s now. Surgical masks and cloth masks offer minimal protection against PM2.5. An N95 respirator, properly fitted, filters roughly 95% of airborne particles. They are available in boxes of ten at hardware stores for under $20. The people most exposed to wildfire smoke in Washington are those who work outside and lack the option to simply go inside — agricultural workers in the Yakima and Wenatchee valleys, construction workers, landscapers. If that describes someone in your household, or someone you're responsible for, the mask is the tool.


Wildfire smoke is not a survivalist scenario. It is a recurring seasonal condition that Washington has, over the past decade, come to share with most of the American West. The goal is not to prepare for collapse. It is to stay healthy, keep kids in school, keep adults at work, and avoid unnecessary ER visits during events that now arrive on something close to an annual schedule.

A cleaner room, a better filter, and a stocked medicine cabinet are not dramatic preparations. They are the kind of boring, durable household infrastructure that makes a nine-day smoke event an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
