Burn bans have been issued across multiple Washington counties, a standard response by local air quality authorities — including the Northwest Clean Air Agency (NWCAA), which oversees air quality in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and San Juan counties — when smoke from wildfires already burdens the regional airshed. The bans prohibit residential burning and, in stricter stages, the use of wood stoves and fireplaces, even as evening temperatures begin to cool heading into September.
