The smoke is not from a single local fire. It is transported smoke, riding high-altitude wind patterns from burning areas to the east and north, then descending as the air column settles over cooler marine air. That mechanism matters for households trying to decide how worried to be.

What upper-level smoke actually means

Upper-level smoke is different from ground-level smoke produced by a fire burning in your immediate area. It typically produces hazy skies, reduced visibility, and elevated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) readings — but the hazard is more diffuse than smoke from a nearby burn. That said, "upper-level" does not mean "harmless." PM2.5 particles are small enough to bypass your nose and throat and reach lung tissue. On days when smoke drops toward the surface — especially in the evening as temperatures cool and the atmospheric mixing layer compresses — air quality at street level can deteriorate quickly.

Washington's Department of Ecology operates a real-time air quality monitoring network. The readings matter more than the sky color. A salmon-colored sunset does not tell you your PM2.5 exposure; the Ecology dashboard or the EPA's AirNow site does. Western Washington households, particularly in valleys like the Snoqualmie, Puyallup, and Chehalis basins, can see worse readings than Seattle proper because cooler, pooled air traps particulates overnight.

Children, older adults, and anyone with asthma, COPD, or cardiovascular conditions face elevated risk even at moderate AQI levels. That is not alarmism — it is the clinical threshold guidance the EPA has published for years.

What we'd actually do

Check the Ecology air quality map before opening windows tonight, not tomorrow morning. Go to the Washington State Department of Ecology's Air Monitoring Network or AirNow.gov and look at the monitor nearest your ZIP code. If PM2.5 is above 35 micrograms per cubic meter (the EPA's 24-hour standard), keep windows closed and run any filtration you have. This takes two minutes and costs nothing.

Build a low-cost clean air room if you don't already have one. Pick one room in your home — ideally a bedroom — and concentrate your filtration there. A box fan with a MERV-13 or higher furnace filter taped to the intake (the "Corsi-Rosenthal box" configuration) costs roughly $30–$50 in materials and measurably reduces indoor PM2.5. University of California Davis researchers documented this in peer-reviewed work; Washington's own Ecology office has referenced it in public guidance. It is not a gimmick. You do not need a $400 HEPA unit to protect a single room for a smoke event.

Replace or check your HVAC filter now. If your home has forced-air heating or cooling, the filter is your first line of defense. A MERV-8 filter does relatively little for PM2.5. A MERV-13 costs a few dollars more and removes a significantly larger fraction of fine particles. Set the fan to "on" (continuous circulation) rather than "auto" while smoke is elevated. If you rent and your landlord controls HVAC maintenance, this is a reasonable moment to ask what filter is installed.

Have N95 respirators accessible for short outdoor trips. Cloth masks and surgical masks do not filter PM2.5 effectively. N95s do, when fitted correctly. Keep a few in a kitchen drawer or your car's glove compartment. You do not need a case of them — three or four per person covers a typical multi-day smoke event with reasonable mask hygiene.

Know your household's medical threshold. If anyone in your home uses a rescue inhaler, has a diagnosed respiratory condition, or is under age five or over 65, their safe outdoor exposure limit is lower than the general population's. Washington's Ecology department publishes action-day guidance with specific recommendations by sensitivity group. Find it before you need it, not on the day AQI spikes.

The bigger picture

Western Washington residents have spent decades assuming the Cascades would buffer them from the wildfire seasons that eastern Washington and Oregon face annually. That assumption is eroding. Smoke transport events now reach Puget Sound with enough regularity that treating indoor air quality as a seasonal preparedness category — alongside earthquake supplies and power outage plans — is rational household planning, not overreaction.

The goal is not to seal yourself indoors at the first haze. It is to have a calibrated response: know your local air quality readings, have basic filtration in place, and protect the most vulnerable people in your home on the days that actually warrant it. A $35 fan filter setup and two bookmarked websites put you substantially ahead of most households when the sky turns that familiar August orange.
